Guys, I never thought Friday would come this week. Last Sunday, I went and got some groceries. It was the first time I had chosen Hy-Vee over Wal-Mart by my own accord. There are endless reasons why consumers may choose one store over another, but this time I knew exactly why. Hy-Vee Wine & Spirits. The weather outside was getting cold and uninviting, and I foresaw a thirst for a belly-warming treat in the days and weeks to come. Knowing well my looming list of to-dos, I wasted no time in researching how to fix a cocktail that the legendary (albeit fictional) Don Draper prefers over all else: the Old Fashioned.
It seems like everything I've been doing lately has been a photo-finish. By the time this week was up I had to take a look at my wastebasket, gorged with scrapped concepts and completed to-do lists, and just laugh. It always gets done. How will you get it done? For me, that's where the fun comes from; the variety of ways any one individual can solve their own problems and others. After all, variety is the spice of life. Allow me to ponder the variety of days in the workweek in my first ever week-in-review.
On Mondays, I wake up knowing tomorrow is Tuesday. Tuesday means production night. Production night means I'm in the Missourian newsroom ALL night. This is not the best news for my progress on a web publishing paper that is due either Tuesday (with feedback from my professor) or Thursday (without feedback, and only a grade). Basically, this cannot wait. I wake up, walk to the kitchen to heat up some quinoa and oatmeal I had made the night before. Every single dish in the apartment is dirty and taking up some pungent real estate except a cereal bowl I found in my room. Dibs. Anyway, I disregard a coagulated lump of ranch dressing floating in the sink (roommates, right?) while I wash my glasses with some of the last drops of Dawn dish soap and grab my thermos full of black coffee to head out the door to media design class. The rest of my day is devoted to this SEO paper. After a couple hour nap, I make a bee line for the third floor of the B.D Owens Library and transfix myself in the various SEO practices of both EMS.com and RoadRunnerSports.com as per my assignment detailed. Lots of pages and lots of screenshots. My Photoshop hotkey quickness increased a couple levels this day. This was also the first time I had ever allowed my NW laptop (ten hour battery life) die in the fields of battle. Had to check out a charger for that bad boy.
Media Literacy presentation goes OK. Our flaky member decides that since he had not taken much responsibility in the previous sections of our presentation to ask, "Now I know we ain't ending our presentation without chy'all askin' us some questions." Totally unscripted. He proceeded to just call on unsuspecting members of our class who alas, had no questions for us. I took the liberty of doing a little shmoozing after class to let our professor know that one of our presenters' had maintained radio silence during our entire research phase, and came up with material was completely unscripted and unsolicited...
Web publishing class. Only about five students actually turned their papers in on the early day. Phew. I was close to being done, but a few sections needed beefing up, and I had yet to adorn my thimble for sewing the whole thing together. Class is over. We listened to this dude rap about search engine optimization. Afterward: more naps. More paper composition. Production night. Made pages A4 and A11 look sexy. Got home at around 2AM. Got little to no sleep at all. Another day bites the dust.
Media design class. Finished up this infographic assignment. I also Got some good feedback on a Barefooters campaign I am working on for my print advertising class. Finished my web pub paper. Even typing those words right now feels great. I had to run to Wal-Mart in the middle of the night to buy toner just to print the dang thing. 35 pages. And I made that sucker pretty. It will undoubtedly find its way onto my portfolio section soon. I spent my last dime on that toner, too. Seriously. I left my apartment and thought I should grab all of my change that isn't pennies, just in case. If I had brought just one less dime, I would have been tonerless that night. The SEO paper gods shined upon me that night. Sleep.
I really like Thursdays. I really liked this Thursday. The Missourian's second-to-last paper of 2014 came out, I dropped off my last massive web publishing paper, and of course I'm always excited to attend an AdInk meeting every Thursday. AdInk meetings are at 4pm, and my web pub class lets out at 3:15. I usually pass the time by drawing on the board before the rest of the AdCats show up. My only regret is erasing this after we left.
Tomorrow is another Monday already, folks. So 'til next time, I'll be here making things happen.
And they will get done.
Today is the day I look out the window and see the year's first snow. Today is the day I slay a Web Publishing paper. Today is the day I start my blog again. Today is the day I tell myself all this and more in the morning shower before falling victim (yes, victim) to a three-hour nap and waking up to an odd urge to watch Evil Dead and do that last thing on my Today is the Day list.
Because why would tomorrow be any better?
A great man once said,
Carpe Dizzem y'all.
I've been wondering what has taken me so long to start blahgging again. All of my posts thus far have been prompted by some professor or another. Blech. Disregard. Today is the day I'm not getting graded on my responses to things people relevant to my studies are certainly not blogging about.
Here's the thing. I HAVE BEEN BUSY.
I'm not whining. I am actually quite proud that I've done so much more with my time than any other semester of mine at NWMSU thus far. Between being heavily involved in NW Ad Ink, interning for a great start-up from the west coast, and just taking some all-around challenging and great classes, my time is tied up in a lot more than playing Dark Souls all day like I did this summer.
AHHHHH, EASY! DON'T PLAY THE TAPE BACKWARDS BRO. YOU IDIOT! SHUT IT OFF AND LISTEN TO YOUR GIRLFRIEND! Sorry. Evil Dead. Rising action. Cheesy plot thickens. Love this movie. Anyway.
There's a lot I've been missing out on posting here. I have been going through my life taking pictures and thinking, "this is a blog post for sure" lately. I'm telling you, the content is there. My life is interesting enough to accommodate that. The rest comes down to my motivation to become better. For awhile, I will be back-pedaling; retelling my semester while I have the time to remember it all. And hopefully before finals week comes crashing down all around me. I have a lot on my plate now. Well, the spring semester is guaranteed to be one hell of a greasy, I-know-I-shouldn't-but-one-more-can't-hurt return to the buffet line for seconds. Bring it on.
My name is Jake and I've been bad about streaming my life events to the interweb. Trying to get better.
If you're going to slap responsibilities on your plate in college, (and you should) you'd best make sure you have some oven-safe Stoneware, because Dixie paper ain't gonna cut it anymore, son.
Step up your college game. Get involved. But don't be afraid to bring some napkins.
